PSGroove, the open source PS3 Jailbreak is now out and about on the internet all thanks to Mathieu Hervais and the PS3 hacking community!

An open source PlayStation 3 jailbreak - PSGroove has been released publicly. It is developed and coded by PS3 game console hacker-modder Mathieu Hervais along with PS3 Hacking community folks. The PSGroove open source code requires purchasing a a small silicon chip to jailbreak the PlayStation 3 game console. Do note that PSGroove with chip jailbreak is totally a do-it-yourself method so you better know what you're messing with. If you're looking for an easy jailbreak, then this method is just not for you.

The sole purpose of jailbreaking PS3 game console is to run unsigned (non Sony approved) applications and other games on it.

Previously reported PSJaibreak.com works on a basis of Flash USB dongle and some code on it. The software code is freely downloadable from PSGroove's Github Repository. But to actually jailbreak the PS3 game console, you'll need either of the hardware - Teeny++ USB Development Board with Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) microcontroller built along with AT90USB key.

In short, you'll need a small USB Development Board chip and microcontroller key (ATB90USB and others) to execute the open-source PSGroove code. Here's a bit of snippet from PSGroove's READ ME file.

This is the PSGroove, an open-source reimplementation of the psjailbreak exploit for AT90USB and related microcontrollers.

This software is not intended to enable piracy, and such features have been disabled. This software is intended to allow the execution of unsigned third-party apps and games on the PS3.

The PS3 hacking community celebrates its brave attempt to release an open-source version of PS3 jailbreak. However, this might not be up for mass adoption and application since it's a DIY method. Sony PlayStation development team members would surely look into this open source code and come out with an update to patch this hole. Yes, the cat and mouse chase between Sony and PS3 hackers has begun.
